Sebastian Tiller a partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett joins Vinson & Elkins where he will co-lead the mergers and acquisitions practice with Steve Gill from the Houston office. Based out of New York, Tiller will share the responsibilities of the operations with Gill in the firm’s Houston office as the firm seeks to constructively enhance strategic M&A efforts.
Tiller’s joining the firm represents a notable uplift of the M&A practice at Vinson & Elkins. Throughout his expansive career, he has represented and counseled US regional banks, private equity funds, companies within the Defense and Cosmetics industries, and many others. In addition, he was deeply engaged in several high-profile M&A transactions, the latest two being; the $6 billion All stock deal of acquisition of TCF Financial Corp by Huntington Bancshares in the year 2021, and the 2022 All stock merger of M&T Bank Corp and People’s United Financial worth $7.6 billion.
In the year 2023, Tiller was part of the team that helped L3Harris Technologies which was represented by Simpson Thacher in a $4.7 billion deal involving the purchase of Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings, which was controversial in the United States due to the market it focused on.
Although there were questions raised, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission allowed the deal to go without a restraining order.
When considering his move to Vinson & Elkins, Tiller mentioned the firm’s continued growth, particularly in New York, as one of the reasons that motivated him to join the firm. He acknowledged the firm’s consistent growth and felt pleased with the firm’s determination to continue growing its M&A and capital markets practice. Vinson & Elkins has an approximately 200 personnel lawyers in these areas, and is still growing its local and global outreach in these areas.
Tiller expressed that he would look forward to working with his clients at Vinson. His inclusion also strengthens the firm’s M&A practice, which is currently undertaking numerous large and intricate transactions with various clients.
Vinson & Elkins, based out of Houston, has also established a new base in Denver in order to better help the firm over the course of the past few years, this has been the trend in many United States markets. With over 600 attorneys, the firm has for the past few years become a formidable force not just in the domestic scene of the United States in M&A, capital markets and litigation, but in the world in general.
